The Ball Park Lounge

When Cincinnati professional baseball team owner approached High St., his initial request was straightforward—he needed a sofa and two chairs to furnish a seating area at Great American Ball Park, primarily for the Cincinnati baseball players’ wives and families. However, rather than simply filling the space with readily available pieces, we saw an opportunity to create something far more intentional.

Understanding that the right design requires more than just quick selections, we encouraged the client to take a step back and consider the full potential of the space.

The challenge was twofold: balancing the urgency of the request with the need for a thoughtful, well-conceived approach. In addition, the space itself presented constraints, requiring careful planning to maximize seating while maintaining a sense of openness and flow.

The Design Approach

To establish a solid foundation for the project, High St. conducted a detailed site analysis, taking precise measurements, capturing photographs, and engaging in strategic discussions to assess the room’s function and the client’s needs. Budget considerations were factored in, ensuring that each selection aligned with both the aesthetic and practical goals of the project.

Rather than defaulting to what was immediately available, we curated a selection of pieces that embodied timeless elegance and durability. A neutral, classic foundation was chosen for the primary furnishings, providing versatility and longevity. To elevate the space, we layered in refined textiles, bespoke wallpaper, and carefully curated accessories—each element selected to enhance both form and function.

The Transformation

The most impactful changes stemmed from our commitment to designing holistically rather than reacting to an immediate need. A fresh, sophisticated palette of paint and wallpaper set the tone, while a more intentional furniture layout improved both aesthetics and usability. Lighting, a frequently overlooked yet essential design component, underwent a dramatic upgrade—harsh fluorescent fixtures were replaced with a thoughtfully executed plan incorporating nine recessed can lights and two sculptural sconces. This shift not only improved the ambiance but also underscored the refined, curated nature of the space.

A final bespoke touch came in the form of a custom reupholstered ottoman, covered in dyed hair-on-hide—an element that introduced depth, texture, and a quiet sense of luxury.

Ultimately, Client said they appreciated the pushback to allow time to enable more impactful changes. The end result was not just a furnished seating area for the team’s families, but a transformed environment that seamlessly balanced sophistication, comfort, and purpose.
